Can Vitamin C Protect Against Breast Cancer? PDF Print E-mail
In an animal study appearing in Carcinogenesis (2009;July:30(7)), scientists found that vitamin C may protect against estrogen induced breast tumors. The study was performed on rats bred to easily develop breast tumors. In animals given estradiol, 82% developed breast tumors. Rat who were given a combination of vitamin C and estradiol had 29% fewer tumors over the 240 day course of the study.

Vitamin E, Carotenoids and Stomach Cancer PDF Print E-mail
Research appearing in the Annals of Oncology (July 31, 2008) looked at the connection between diet and stomach cancer. Data was gathered from 230 cancer patients and 547 controls in this case controlled study. The researchers found that intake of carotenoids and vitamin E reduced the risk of stomach cancer. Carotenoids are the pigments in fresh produce—creating the bright colors of fruits and vegetables. In the plant, they protect form the oxidative damage of photosynthesis. When we consume them in our diet, they act as powerful antioxidants. Perhaps the carotenoid that most people are familiar with is beta carotene. Beta carotene is found in fresh produce and can be converted to vitamin A by the body. In fact, all carotenoids have some vitamin A activity.

Is There a Link Between Antihistamines and Cancer? PDF Print E-mail
Research published in Science News (1994;145:324) raises the question of whether the antihistamines we take for allergies may be linked to cancer. Studies in mice have shown that antihistamines promote the growth of malignant tumors. Scientists at the University of Manitoba believe that the consumption of various medications, including antihistamines and antidepressants, may increase the risk for cancer. In February, 1994, the Department of Health and Human Services noted an increase in the incidence of cancer in the United States. Scientists at the University of Manitoba believe that the consumption of various medications, including antihistamines and antidepressants, may increase the risk for cancer and may be part of the reason for the increase. They have demonstrated that drugs like Elavil, Claritin, Hismanal, Atarax, Unisom, Prozac, NyQuil and Reactine have all created tumors in animal studies. Some antihistamines behave like the drug DPPE, which has been linked to enhancing tumor growth. By binding to histamine receptors, which interferes with enzymes designed to detoxify and remove poisons from the body. This will also interfere with the system that regulates cell growth. The drugs do not necessarily cause cancer, but can enhance the growth of cancer.

Lignans Lower Breast Cancer Risk PDF Print E-mail
Lignans are phytoestrogens with antioxidant activity. Lignans are from the cell walls of plants and are found in a variety of foods, including flax seeds, soybeans, whole grain cereals, rye, broccoli, pumpkin seed and some berries. A recent prospective study, appearing in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (2007; 99(6): 475-86), analyzed the lignan intake of 58,049 postmenopausal French women. There was a link between lignan intake and lower breast cancer risk. Intake was assessed in the women, who were not taking any sort of soy isoflavone supplement, with a self-administered dietary history questionnaire. The women in the top quartile of lignan intake had a 17% lower risk of developing breast cancer than the women in the quartile with the lowest lignan intake.

Leukemia and Maternal Diet PDF Print E-mail

According to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, women who eat more fruits, vegetables and protein before pregnancy may lower the risk of their children developing leukemia. Researchers had 276 mothers from Northern California answer a questionnaire about their diets in the year prior to their pregnancies. Half of those filling out the questionnaire had a child who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the other half had children who were cancer-free.
